History of Barot

▪Barot was a formed part of the Mandi riyasat before and during British times and was governed by the King of Mandi.
▪Before independence, Barot connected Kullu valley and Kangra valley.
▪The importance of this route declined once Kullu was connected to a road from Mandi.
▪Barot is cheaper than other hill stations, especially compared to Mussorie.
▪It was under the colonial rule of the Britishers.
▪It has a 90 years old railway track line established by Britishers.

Barot was originally developed in the 1920s for Shanan Hydel Project is now a tourist location in Mandi district in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh.

Why Barot?

▪Barot is a serene and pleasant valley. It is a frequent backpacker and day tourist destination. 
▪Most tourists are fascinated by the flabbergasting views and cheap accommodation. 
▪One must visit Barot for its Uhl river which is the home to a variety of trout fishes. 
▪The best part is to wake up early and catch the first light of the morning. 
▪It is not a crowded place and does not fall in the limelight so I highly suggest you visit this place after the lockdown is over.
▪It is one of the best places to spent vacations with family & friends. One can opt for camping, bike ride, cycle ride, trekking and stay adventuresome because when it comes to adventure' you need to visit "The Himalayas" moreover on the way to Barot, the steep sides of the roads become a multiplier towards the thrill one looks for.

Best time to visit

The best time to visit Barot is between April and June, during the summer's and between November and February in the winter as the view is mesmerizing.

Places to visit

1) Uhl River 

Uhl river originates from Thamsar glacier and flows through Uhl valley crossing villages Bada Gran. It allows travelers to indulge in outdoor and adventurous activities like fishing and camping. It is one of the most famous places to visit in Barot. Flanked by Oak forests and Deodar, you can experience nature’s glory to the fullest in this area.

2) Nargu Wildlife Sanctuary

One of the best places to visit in Barot is the Nargu Wildlife Sanctuary that is situated at the banks of River Uhl. This sanctuary is inhabited by diverse species of animals & birds like barking deer, musk deer, and monal. This sanctuary is one of the major attractions to explore. Just make sure you have your camera along with you as you spot such animals living in their original habitat.

3) Barot Temple

Getting away from the bustling life of the city one can find a way of spirituality and peace. You can get a glimpse of the holy side of Barot and witness the mesmerizing statues of the local deity of Dev Pashakot Temple 

4) Kareri Lake

Kareri Lake flows 147km away from the barot. It is the main spot where trekking is entertained. The mountains cover the crystal clear glacier water.

5) Kotla Fort

Kotla Fort is located near Kangra. This fort was constructed during the period of Gular Rajas. This fort is visited by history buffs and those who enjoy strolling through the thick pine forests.
